Col. Eben Francis Stone was Massachusetts representative in the Forty-ninth Congress, serving from 1881 to 1887. He died Jan. 22, 1895. Capt. Edgar J. The large number of desertions from some of the companies is accounted for by the fact that the recruits were brought to camp by agents of the cities who paid bounties as soon as the recruits were mustered into the United States service. The officers of those companies objected to accepting such recruits, prophesying that many of them would desert, but the objections were overruled and the officers were compelled to accept them.
